Completed in stages between the 8th and 19th, the Aachen Cathedral reflects all the aesthetic tendencies ever adopted throughout ages. Originally inspired by the churches of the Eastern Holy Roman Empire, it was developed in the Middle Ages, and further decorated by successive authorities to end up as a sophisticated, complex masterpiece of sacral architecture that served as an inspiring groundwork for other German constructions. What makes the Imperial Cathedral (as it is called) even more attractive is the fact that it has been chosen as the final resting place of Charlemagne.
