Detroit Vacation

My initial impression of a Detroit vacation wasn't much really, in fact I was not thrilled at the prospect of holidaying in Michigan at all. When my hubby told me that Detroit was his top pick for our vacation, I was pretty disappointed. It's not that is disliked the city or anything like that. I just had absolutely no idea how we would spend our time there, I simply had no idea what one did over there.

The whole idea for the vacation came about when my hubby found out that he had to go there for work. He figured that we could squeeze in a vacation; all he had to do was stay on for a couple of days after he was done with his work thing. The only problem was that it was winter in Michigan! I was not particularly eager to leave the warm climate of sunny California and only begrudgingly agreed to go along with his idea.

As I was so reluctant about the trip in general, Richard, my husband took it upon himself to do all the planning from booking our flights to arranging accommodation and even activities. My only task was to pack and yet, I felt like I was given the more difficult job.

Given that I lived in the glorious climate of south California, my clothes were mostly suited to warm weather. I had a cupboard full of light, airy clothing specially designed to keep you cool. None of it was suited to the winter in Detroit and I was worried because I knew that buying winter wear would be very expensive. Luckily I managed to chance upon a thick jacket that was going at a discounted price.

My impression of the place and my attitude towards the trip as a whole did not change when we first got there, because we landed right in the middle of a snow storm. I distinctly recall walking out of the airport into a gust of icy cold wind, feeling very annoyed.

Luckily, Richard had booked us into a luxury hotel; this improved my mood a little. From the cosy comfort of my hotel room I was finally able to appreciate the beauty of winter. With snowflakes falling and everything covered in white, it was really a pretty sight. Richard got down to work while I spent my days indulging myself at the spa.

When the business stuff was done with we hopped into a rented car and headed north for a surprise that Richard had planned for us. Incidentally when you rent a car on vacations in Michigan, it comes complete with snow chains. Thankfully we did not have to use these as the weather held up.

The surprise led us to Shanty Creek Resort where my darling husband had arranged for a week of luxury and indulgence. Apart from all the pampering we also got to do a whole host of activities from skiing to sled riding. And there was delicious food to go along with it all. Ultimately our Detroit vacation was a resounding success proving that you just have to be open to an experience to really enjoy yourself.
