Detroit is one of the busiest, largest cities in the United States, and a major port, settled on the Detroit River of the Midwest region, and the only major city looking south to Canada. Known to everybody as the traditional automotive centre of the world, Detroit has very much to offer to its residents, as well as to all tourists crossing its threshold.
One of the most popular theatres in the world is the Fisher Theatre Detroit, placed on 3011 West Grand Boulevard, close to the junction with Second Street, in the New Centre.
The building housing the theatre, finished in 1928, made entirely out of marble, granite and limestone, was designated, on June 29, 1989, a National Historic Landmark. The Art Deco skyscraper was honored the year's most beautiful commercial structure in the year of its construction, by the Architectural League of New York.
The Fisher Theatre Detroit, one of the oldest venues of live theatre, featured a Mayan Revival style lavish Aztec-themed interior originally, with 3,500 seats, the theatre has been renovated to a 2,089-seat theatre, allowing spectators to enjoy a more spacious stay, while the style of the interior has been changed to a simpler mid-century design.
The theatre initially operated as a movie centre, and changed to a Broadway shows venue in 1961, after its renovation. Ever since then, the Fisher Theatre has been the favorite stage of many of the stars on Broadway, including Carol Channing, Bernadette Peters, Joel Grey, Lyn Redgrave and Mary Martin. It has been the host of the world premieres of several important plays, such as Fiddler on the roof, Golden Boy, Hello Dolly or Sweet Charity.
Finding a hotel near the Fisher Theatre Detroit will not arise any problems, as the theatre is placed in an excellent location within the New Centre area, and has easy access to the entire city.
The Hotel St. Regis Detroit, recently renovated in 2007 and brought to modern high standards, is located just a few meters away from the theatre at 3071 West Grand Boulevard, with prices starting at $89 per room, per night.
The Inn On Ferry Street is a deluxe hotel, offering non-smoking rooms for the price of $109 per night, in two Carriage Houses and four luxurious mansions, in the Detroit Cultural Medical and University district. The hotels can be found at 84 East Ferry Street, less than a mile from the Fisher Building.
