Historic centers, bucolic villages, towering castles, colossal bridges, and magnificent churches dot the 20 kilometer stretch of the river valley whose cultural and natural values combine into a perfect weekend road trip route. Blessed with unpretentious beauty, but also marked with dramatic events, Dresden Elbe Valley is a soothing and stimulating landscape with a bulk of interest for everyone. In its very heart, Dresden appears as a cultural, educational, political and economic center of Germany, almost as if the tragic 1945 bombing has never taken place. An interesting fact is that the place was removed from the UNESCO World Heritage Site after the authorities had transgressed a ban on building a four-lane bridge across the valley.
