Emerald Isle Vacations

If you are looking for a unique getaway, consider Emerald Isle vacations. Emerald Isle, North Carolina, is located on the Crystal Coast, and is separated by the mainland by the Bogue Sound. The pristine beaches and salt marshes are perfect for families, and there is something for everyone. Emerald Isle has a history as colorful as its name. Originally home to the Algonquin Indians, it was settled by English Colonists in 1730. Emerald Isle was prime pirate territory; in fact, nearby Beaufort was attacked on two separate occasions in 1747. Named for the many trees growing on it, Emerald Island was uninhabited until the 1950s.

The island's south-facing beaches allow visitors to enjoy the stunning sunrises and sunsets without glare from the water. The island also has a long beach season: average water temperatures are 68 + degrees from May until October. While there are several beach access points on the island, two stand out from the rest. "The Point" is at western end of the island, and showcases sweeping panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, Bogue Inlet, Bear Island, and Bogue Sound. Hammocks Beach State Park on Bear Island is only accessible by boat. Ferry service is offered from the mainland, and the uninhabited island has a snack bar and bath house, as well as primitive campsites.

North Carolina's Outer Banks are known as an excellent location to see sunken vessels, and Emerald Isle is no exception. Divers of all experience levels can enjoy the underwater sights, which include a German World War Two Submarine U-352. With artificial reefs and lots of marine life, it is an experience you won't soon forget. There are several dive companies in order to make sure you have a great underwater adventure.

An Emerald Isle vacation is perfect for birdwatchers. People come from all over to observe the many pelicans, gulls, herons, and egrets that call the island home. Swimming, soaking up the sun, and collecting beautiful seashells are other great ways to spend a relaxing day. Biking is a great way to get around the island; in fact, there is a 3 mile bike path through town, as well as a lane that leads to The Point.

For a unique experience, why not try parasailing? The view from the air gives you a whole new point of view. If you prefer to stay on the boat you are on, rather than soaring high above it, there are at least a dozen companies in the area that offer boat tours and cruises. Many places rent boats, jet skis, and kayaks. Surfing lessons are also available.

Fishermen have several choices: the island offers freshwater fishing, the calm waters of the sound, or the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. With dozens of fishing charter companies in the area, you are virtually guaranteed to go home with fish, and not just fish stories.

For visitors with children, there are several attractions that are family-friendly. The area has several places that feature mini-golf, bumper boats, go karts, and batting cages. The North Carolina Aquarium, just minutes away, is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Days.

Emerald Isle is an excellent choice for the perfect beach vacation. Whether you want to play on one of the island's three golf courses, sample great local restaurants, or just enjoy a relaxing day on an unspoiled beach, you will find exactly what you are looking for in this corner of the world. Try Emerald Isle vacations for memories that will last a lifetime.
