Greenwich Village (often simply referred to as "the Village") is a well-known, mostly residential district in Manhattan. At first uninhabitable because of its marshes, the area soon became a residential one in the 19th century and was later colonized by bohemians, beatniks and literary greats squatting in abandoned places. Today with the artistic vibe dwindled a bit, Greenwich Village is a rather vibrant spot full of student life with the NYU's large campus and a thriving nightlife scene along the MacDougal Street. The major portion of its hustle and bustle takes place in its focal point, the Washington Square which remains the neighborhood's landmark.
