Located in the Algarve region of southern Portugal, is it one of the few destinations within this tourist hotspot that has managed to retain its authenticity.

The Algarve region is lined with sandy beaches and luxury hotels and resorts. It has all the great makings of a beach holiday paradise and this is what keeps the hordes of tourists coming back for more each summer. Lagos however, offers you a little more than just a typical summer of fun.

Lagos is primarily a port city and it is home to generations of fishermen. The market and the fishing port continue to play an important role in the city's economy but thanks to the beautiful beaches, rocky coastline and quirky finds; it is still a city worth visiting.

When you get to Lagos, one of the first things that you will see is the Marina and the harbour. This area has recently been refurbished and is a wonderful place to hang out. There are a number of great restaurants, quaint cafes and shops along the marina. At night there are usually performances and live entertainment that you can enjoy while you dine. The town also has many statues and monuments that have been erected in honour of important people in the town's history.

The rocky coastline is perfect for a walk. Remember to bring your camera as there are a couple of picturesque sights. Potato beach for instance lies between two cliffs, providing dramatic views of the town. There is also the Dona Ana which is popular among visitors and locals alike. The beach is bound by huge rock formations that give it a secluded vibe. If you want to take part in some water sports it might be a good idea to head down to the nearby Praia de Luz which is in the town of Luz.

Catch a cheap flight to Lagos where you can be close to nature at some of the most beautiful natural sites. There are the Golden Coast Grottos and the Alvor Lagoon. You absolutely must hike up to Mercy Point where the view overlooks the open ocean. So, if you are heading to Portugal or thinking of holidaying in the Algarve region, be sure to put Lagos on your itinerary for an experience that is a little different and a lot more enriching than the run of the mill beach vacation.
