There are quite a few things you can do in Manila, even on a shoestring budget, and there are cheap places to stay as well. The information here should give you some good leads. Usually, it is not expensive to travel through most parts of South East Asia, Philippines included. A backpacker who has planned well should be able to get by with as little as USD20 a day.

One of the best strategies is to book your accommodation online, if you are looking for tariff discounts. Manila hotels, inns and even hostels offer meaty discounts on online bookings. Mostly, to avail of the best deals, you've got to book in advance. However, some cheap hotels in Manila offer very good deals for last minute online bookings too. On the whole, the rates on the internet are cheaper than if you just walk in, so make sure you get online to save some money.

Manila is divided into districts, so while booking, make sure you check the district your accommodation is in. Choosing your district strategically will help you save some transportation cost, as you visit the major sites in the city. The oldest district in Manila is known as Intramuros, meaning ‘within the walls.' It is the historical part of the city, and being rich in both culture and heritage, it is certainly worth your time.

If partying is your cup of tea, the best place to stay would be Malate, an area with a vibrant nightlife. Some of the cheapest accommodation is available in Ermita, formerly the rid-light district. The Midland Plaza, Pearl Manila Hotel and CSB Hotel are your best bets here. There are several hostels here too, if you are looking for something even cheaper. However, the facilities in the hostels are very basic.

Considering sightseeing on a budget, the best place is the Intramuros area. Originally a fort constructed by the Spanish, it was damaged during WW2. However, it was re-built afterwards, and there are many interesting sights within the walls, such as Casa Manila, Manila Cathedral and Fort Santiago.

Another popular place to visit, especially for a beach picnic, is the White Beach. This picturesque corner of the city is an ideal place to sunbathe, and take a dip in the clear water. If you love the outdoors, get down to the Rizal Park, one of the largest parks in Manila. You could join the Tai Chi classes in the mornings, rent a pair of roller skates, or simply around in the Japanese or Chinese Gardens. The park also popularly hosts many free performances and concerts.

Take a walk down the Roxas Boulevard in the evenings, and enjoy the views of the setting sun. As dusk fades, Baywalk is a really good place to party through the night.

A lot of cultures come together in the cosmopolitan city of Manila. Rather uniquely, the city combines American and Spanish influences and yet retains its own native traditions and culture. If you are a budget traveler looking for a discount, Manila hotels will be glad to open their doors, and while you are here there are several cheap attractions to explore.
