Once a sleepy port, now a hip holiday destination for both beach bums and history aficionados. 9th century walls and a massive Ribat tower keep guard over a modern resort complex epitomizing the trend in contemporary Tunisia to harmoniously set the traditional with the modern without harm to either. The appeal of the Old Town is all the stronger when you know that after a strenuous walk and a hearty meal of local specialties you can take your siesta time on a stretch of white sands that fade gently into the turquoise waters. A tourist-friendly oasis of peace is not to be found all too often today, but Monastir is definitely one of those few.
