Forrest Gump iconic saying was ‘Life's like a box of chocolates' and this imaginative metaphor is perfectly suited for Salzburg. Mind you, the chocolate treats are wrapped with ornamented golden foil and they melt deliciously to Mozart tones here. Salzburg is a visual delight of Baroque masterpiece churches crowding the skyline, lively squares, houses and murmuring fountains. The cobbled center resounds with the maestro's symphonies oozing from the Schloss Mirabell or Altstadt (Old Town) restaurants to the clatter of a horse-drawn carriage passing by. But if the high-brow cosmopolitan sophistication of Salzburg Festival's rich musical life, opera houses and sleek shops is a bit over the top for you, there's plenty to balance it. The hearty Bierstuben selling locally brewed beer, Museum der Moderne with its contemporary works or a string of laidback bars lining the Salzach right bank. Whichever you choose, you can be sure of time well spent for, as Count Ferdinand Czernin once wrote, ‘All Salzburg is a stage'.
