Schloss Herrenchiemsee

In 1873 King Ludwig II of Bavaria acquired the Herreninsel with the intention of erecting his Royal Palace in the middle of Bavaria's largest lake. And one can hardly find his determination surprising as the location is truly breath-taking. Modeled on Versailles, Herrenchiemsee (New Palace) was Ludwig's final and most extravagant project, consuming more money and effort than his other two castles. The epitome of luxury, overabundance, vanity, and splendor, overflowing with gold and reflecting in its thousand mirrors, the place should not be missed for, be it for the glorious setting or the palace itself.

    MY RATING:

We've toured both Versailles and Herrenchiemsee (modeled after the French palace)...each are impressive. Versailles is magnificient, but the surrounding area can't compare to the lake setting at Herrenchiemsee. We visited Herrenchiemsee in December. Bundle up for the short boat ride, then a lovely walk thru the woods to reach the Palace and Gardens. Well worth the trip!
