Washington OVERVIEW

Washington is not that prim and proper capital that many expect it to be judging on the number of museums, memorials and white-collar institutions fitted neatly within the city bounds. On the one hand, dazzlingly white of marble and sweet-smelling of cherry blossom, it boasts an eclectic music scene thriving in its corners and ranging from smooth jazz and folk to Indian rock and even hip-hop. Navigate between the landmarks of the National Mall to riffle through all glorious chapters of American history, but then head to the "Black Broadway", order a bowl of chili at Ali's, and listen to what hell they were going through when the assassination of Martin Luther King triggered off a series of riots followed by spiritually devastating drug wars. In other word, Washington is the place to witness democracy at its most representative, but also plunge into dramatic circumstances in which it was fought for. It does give the city an authentic feel that makes the Americans love their capital, whether they back its big wigs or not.
