StumbleThe crime statistics of world's five most dangerous cities are disheartening and shocking. With such high rates of homicide, robberies and violence these cities deservedly bear the names of 'the places of chaos and death' or 'the murder capitals of the world'. Despite the scary data, some of them still remain wanted tourist destinations, though extreme caution is strongly advised when visiting.
5. Cape Town. South Africa.

Crime has been a major problem in South Africa (both for locals and travelers) for many years now, and the murder and robbery statistics loom large in today's society.
The "good" news is that the number of killings declined by 3.4% to around 18 000 (sic!) between April 2008 and March 2009. Still there are 50 murders a day in South Africa. The latest data shows that there have been 71,500 sexual offenses (10% increase), 18,400 burglaries (27% increase), and 13,900 business robberies (41% increase) reported from April 2008 to March 2009. If it's any consolation, the street robbery declined by 7% to 72,194.

The beautifully located Cape Town is among the most dangerous towns in the country due to its high level of robberies, rapes, kidnappings and murders. The city is about the same size as Caracas and it has a murder rate of 62 per 100,000 inhabitants. According to the police, the homicides usually occur in the poorer districts and suburbs of the town rather than in upscale areas. Due to the poverty (the country has been facing a deep recession) the robberies are common. Therefore, traveling alone and using ATM's at night is not advised.

The homicide rate in New Orleans ranks way above other American cities and towns, and therefore the city has been named the murder capital of the USA. The total number of murders equaled 179 in 2008 in this small city of around 300,000 residents. Nevertheless, there have been 15% fewer killings in 2008 than in 2007 when the police reported 210 murders. Also other crime rates are dropping in the town. Rape went down by 44% and armed robbery 4.85% in 2008 in comparison to 2007.

Still, according to the FBI data there have been 95 homicides per 100,000 residents in 2008. In turn New Orleans Police Department reported 67 murders per 100,000 in 2008. A scary comparison has recently been made by the Time magazine stating that Baghdad in Iraq with its murder rate of about 48 per 100,000 people is now being safer, considering the statistics, than New Orleans.
Violent crime is a serious problem especially in the low-income neighborhoods of the town. Lonely Planet advises travelers to New Orleans to be cautious and avoid walks at night, especially if you are alone.

Another unsafe destination among world's most dangerous cities is Caracas, the capital of Venezuela.
At the end of 2008 the Foreign Policy magazine called the city "the murder capital of the world". According to the official statistics there have been 130 homicides per 100,000 residents in 2008. Only in December 2008 there were at least 510 people killed in the capital, as CNN reported.

The problems of Caracas are not only drug trade and gang battles, but also increasing poverty of the city inhabited by around 4 million people. Murders mainly take place in the capital's poorest areas - between 1970s and 1990s the poverty rate increased by 300% to 65%. Although during the oil boom the economic situation improved, the poverty level remains very high.
Moreover, experts underline that the murder ratio has increased by 67% since President Chavez took control over the country. There is police abuse, no gun control, and no good control over the militias, as various media report.

Also Mexico, one of the world's greatest travel destinations thanks to its fascinating history and stunning natural sites, is, unfortunately, facing a serious problem of robbery, kidnapping, sexual assault and drug-related crimes.
Among worst affected areas in the country is the Chihuahua state and, above all, Ciudad Juárez. The city located across the U.S and Mexican border, home to 1.5 million people, has recently got a very bad reputation due to its shocking rates of violence. Bloody and violent fighting between the drug cartels have spread across the town, posing a serious threat to locals and travelers.

Since January 2007 there have been 8330 drug-related murders reported in Mexico, of which 50% accounted for Ciudad Juárez. The city reports 130 murders per 100,000 inhabitants (as of August 2009), which is currently the world's highest murder rate ( outside the official war zone). In February 2009 the U.S. State Department announced that since January 2008 there had been 1,800 people killed in the city.

Since the overthrow of President Siad Barre in 1991 one million people have lost lives in Somalia due to the civil war and famine.

I would go to all these cities except for mogadishu just because it looks real ugly and dirty like nothing to offer as a travel destination all the other cities seems pretty decent looking cape town looks like a beautiful city and of course new orleans for mardi gras and juarez is alrite lots of nite clubs there and hot looking gurls been there over 20 times its interesting and has a lot to offer and i bet caracas does as well.

Juarez has the potential to be a great city. The things that I see wrong there is that there is two classes of people poor and rich. No middle class it causes the peter pan effect. It takes one person to lead people to live in a fantasy land. To live a life of drug dealing. Maybe we should think of legalization of marijuana. People say it's the gateway drug, maybe its the gateway to a diffrent approach of controlling illegal drugs. Heroin is growing to be a huge problem. Maybe the tax we would make off Marijuana could go to help those struggling with people with addiction problems. I grew up in El Paso and I think we should not forget about the woman being killed. Juarez I hope UN arrives to ease tensions.

Well I lived in India and it was the safest place I ever lived in!!! I always felt safe there. Well now I live in New York and kinda afraid to go out in the nights because I always feel that some racist noob will shoot me!! It happens a lot in New York!! But at least i am in the safest area of Long Island so I am pretty safe though!!
I've met a girl form Caracas on the internet and we're meeting up in my home town, Cape Town, in December. Should make for some interesting comparitive studies. Also, I currently work in Luanda, Angola where carrying an AK-47 in the open is more common than not. My opinion is that any city with high poverty will have high crime... ie... high population + high poverty = violent crime.

I traveled to many countries and I can tell you that Thailand is very very safe.

Caracas is way worse than how is even portrayed in here. The actual killing rates are higher, a lot of those killings are not even reported due to the places where they take place. Also the government censures a lot of media reporting in this topic to not draw international attention. There are tons of kidnapping and people literally disappear every day in Caracas. Its really sad to know that the situation is out of control and its only getting worse.
San Francisco is my town, and its amazingly safe. Yes, there are the odd killings in the Bayview/Hunter's Point areas, and definitely some drug killings across the Bay Bridge in Oakland, but you can roam the streets in 99% of SF in the middle of the night, and you'll be just fine. This is largely a wealthy city, so I suspect that is why you're safe.

I live in Juarez, and I guess I'm proud to say that I'm alive. Now I can show off saying that I live in the world's most dangerous city. I go to other states and if I don't like somebody I just say I'm from Cd. Juarez, and they get all scared. In addition, I'm a boxer, so they should be affraid.
P.S. after hearing and seing so many deaths, you get used to, and It doesn't scare you anymore (doesn't mean you are safe)

Tijuana has just as bad crime, 12 cut off heads where found in a dumpster. Kidnappings happen all the time, I have a friend from there who hasn't seen his family in months cause they where kidnapped. I'm from Lazaro Cardenas Michoacan, come visit, it's pretty safe, it got a bit violent recently cause they arrested the head of La Familia Michoacan, but he escaped so it's okay now.

ermm.. sorry to disagree with you all but... the world's most dangerosu city by far is MEDELLIN COLOMBIA! Everyday you hear at least 10 to 15 murders, plus the ones that are not published. Eventhough the city is cool and somewhat safe, there are many gang related crimes every day, not to say every hour. there are some places known as comunas, in which paramilitar and guerrilla irregular forces fight for their territories in a drug related carnage. THAT is hell!

Where did Somalia go wrong? I mean they were already messed before America came in. Just where did they go wrong? I have friends that are Muslim, and I know that Islam is a beautiful religion (personally, I'm considering converting). But I just don't get how these people could be so malicious and pretend to follow this religion. Not to be rude, but I take the bus everyday and the Somalians aren't exactly the nicest people (the young ones especially).

well, i live in juarez, last year 2009 we have around 2600 kills and this year start with average 9.9 kills per day I just worried cuz the problems is between drugs cartels but when militaries and federal police arrive to the city start extorsions this affect a lot people im not sure if this is teh reaso but before they come juarez doesn't know this event just kills for drugs

Yes Juarez Mexico is definitely a war zone; and the Federal Police instead of help ease the situation they come to kidnap and extort everyone with a business (one of the most corrupt polices in the world); I saw once an execution where a police car was as close as 10 meters where they are killing someone with AK-47 and they just look and drove the other way! Also I have several friends who are not rich but have being kidnap and their families had to come up with sums between 40,000 and 100,000 USD to pay their ransom; thank God all of them have make it back alive. I definitely fear for my family and loved ones safety every single day.

Funny thing about Somalia is that it's more dangerous if you're not somali. I know plenty of folks who go every year and some people send their unruly children "back home." My Mum went back this summer for a week and she said that you have to pay $30 to enter the country (i.e. leave the airport) and to go home on the plane (even if you've got a ticket already). Doesn't matter if you were born there or your entire family are "pure" somalis.

i think the worst city ever is cd juarez because i live here and every day they kill 10 to 15 people a day. on the weekends there is alot of drunk people who crash and kill other people. all the police officers dont do any thing. they hear gun shoots and they go the other way. there is alot of kidnappers. not even the military can do anythin about it

Somalia-prob.no1, Sierra Leone, Johannesburg (v bad news & worse than Cape Town), yes-New Orleans, Compton, Homestead(Miami), Nthrn Mexico, Medellin, Kabul, Bagdad, parts of the Phillipines, Malaysian/Thai border,many parts of Russia, Washington DC, Caracus, Palm Is(off Australia-due to masive per capita homicides amongst aboriginals), parts of Sth Italy-Naples/Palermo, Guinea, Burundi, Sudan, Sth East Nigeria, Pakistan/Afghan border.
It's sad but a FACT that muslims,poverty and drugs are nearly always involved in these tragic environments.

I lived & travelled all over South Africa and haven't been a victim of voilent crime EVER! (touch wood) Did however had burglaries a few times. Everyone I know in Cape Town has either been broken in more times I could count. Attacked on a train, Raped in their own homes, attacked at an ATM withdrawing money, and more. I would never again be free walking in the streets after dark, walking in the park or driving a car as car jackings is the norm.......

ok, South africa is not that safe but really not that dangerous.....i have been a victim of a smash and grab incident, bank robbery, attempted bank robbery where i was shot at with an ak47, highjack and an armed robbery in a pick n pay. BUT i still LOVE south africa and will not pack and move......it is a beautifull country with wonderful weather and animals. Yes i do agree that we have corruption alot but things will change if we all have a positve attitude. and come on....give us credit....its only been 17 years since apartheid......we have really come a very far way......tourists don't get attacked and killed around every single corner....and Cape Town is beautiful.....you get alot of crime in cape town but they are gang related.....in Johannesburg there is crime where they will take your cellphone out your car or highjack you but that is when you travel in JHB CBD. and it is not always dangerous. i am a WHITE young LADY who got stuck in traffic in JHB CBD and had a very friendly TAXI DRIVER who helped me to get through the traffic. It just shows you need the right attitude......crime happens everywhere....no matter where you stay of live.......it is al over the world.....the only place where it is crime free is in space.....or maybe under the sea in the ocean....or some weird place....
