Just read about the SteriPen water purifier in the travel blog here. Has anyone actually tried it? How can I be sure it really works? And isn't it yet another piece of s*** with elements replaceable every 2 weeks? I'm seriously curious. If it's really what they say it is, I'm getting one!

Haven't used it in fact, but definitely would if I had to. What's the life-span? No idea, but as far as I know it's available with rechargeable batteries and a solar charging device. If non-affiliated experts are to be trusted, it a reliable little gadget that can easily rival other methods of water disinfection. Sure it's not going to turn a murky puddle into crystal clear, potable aqua vitae, but it can definitely save you a lot of trouble when backpacking, both in terms of health and comfort.
