I went on Europe tour last year. There are actually thousands of castles throughout Europe. But I like Neuschwanstein castle very much. Neuschwanstein is one of the most popular castle in Europe. Neuschwanstein Castle was built by King Ludwig II. Although the Castle was designed to look medieval, it had quite modern refinements. Views of the surrounding countryside from the top of the castle are beautiful. It is amazing experience in winter.

    dove castello di dracula?

  9. Joanna Oct 7, 2010 1:39 AM

I think some people here are missing the point. It is a list of 15 amazing castles around the world, not the 15 most amazing castles in the world. So it's not that any have been "forgotten" or left out, simply one person's take on the title. I'm sure if everyone who commented on here put together a list of 15 amazing castles, they would all contain completely different places around the world, depending on where we've all visited.

  10. Urban Ghosts Media Oct 8, 2010 6:32 PM

These are absolutely beautiful photos! I come from near Castle Howard in North Yorkshire, setting for Brideshead Revisited. Visited last summer for first time in years, and it's an awesome place. By "complex", I think you mean estate :) Great article!

    Portugal?

  12. Tom Oct 17, 2010 6:09 PM

One of the weirdest castles is Pretjama Castle in Slovenia. It is built almost totally inside a cave.

  13. Tom Oct 17, 2010 6:11 PM

Predjama Castle in Slovenia is one of the weirdest. It is almosta totally inside a cave.

I love how some people can't comprehend that Japan has castles.
Yes people, there are other cultures out there besides Europe!
Just shows how ignorant we Americans are...

  17. Andreas Oct 20, 2010 8:14 AM

    Edinburgh Castle!!

what abou tthe alhabra in granada spain?

  19. Sybnann Oct 27, 2010 12:27 AM

I just wanted to agree that the castles posted from Japan do not even look like castles, and that there are others that look more like what most of us think of when we think of castles, that maybe should have been posted instead. I wish I had the means to see more of them. I have always loved castles.

  20. Viv Nov 6, 2010 2:28 AM

Should have put Kronborg Castle in Elsinore, Denmark. It's known as Hamlet's castle and very beautiful...

Malbork Castle - the most impressive crusaders brick castle in Poland. Really awesome !

  23. Trinity Dec 9, 2010 12:04 PM

For the person who put this presentation together, it is what they thought were the top 15. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. I'm sure if I made a list it would be missing castles others thought were more important. It's all subjective. Just enjoy the pictures, huh? I am, as I speak, writing down all the castles that other people have mentioned, to look up later.

  24. Peoney Dec 18, 2010 3:39 AM

what a very cool castle photos! I love it.

  25. Michael Jan 7, 2011 1:17 AM

Wawel castle, in Poland should be on this list.

  26. LAURU Jan 17, 2011 8:07 AM

Peles Castle - Romania is number one !!!

  27. Agata Jan 20, 2011 9:27 PM

Why not have a castle in Krakow (Poland) !
It is older than that of Prague!

  28. cameron Jan 23, 2011 3:59 AM

    hhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyy

  29. DTravelsround Jan 24, 2011 12:08 AM

England has the most coolest castles ever

  31. riitaa Mar 4, 2011 8:25 AM

    Great collection looking beautyful.

  32. Jsleazzzy Mar 10, 2011 6:25 AM

Some of this is just plain wrong, the one in Prague is a cathedral, also the pic for neuschwanstein is not actually Neuschwanstein. There is also a difference between a palace and a castle, and it is not observed here

  33. Robert Mar 10, 2011 7:16 PM

    Neuschwanstein construction began in 1869.

  34. Jesse Mar 10, 2011 10:53 PM

    Castles are so sweet.

  35. Paradhox Mar 10, 2011 11:39 PM

Peles Castle in Romania is one of the most beautiful and gorgeous castles in the world!
Inside the castle is a real art.
And for those who do not know yet, there is still next to Peles Castle a castle, the castle Pelisor.

  36. zindadilpakistan Apr 16, 2011 8:50 PM

There are around 34 Castles in Pakistan. One of the oldest civilizations in the world, the Indus Valley civilization flourished over 5,000 years ago in most areas now in Pakistan. Fossilized remains of Stone Age man have also been discovered in the Chakwal district of the Punjab province of Pakistan.

Nur Mahal Castle is one among these 34 Castles, located in Bahawalpur.

  37. A. Bernardo Apr 18, 2011 2:11 AM

Well I am not even joking when I say that the Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra beat the crap out of 50% of those castles.

  38. cristian scarlat Apr 26, 2011 10:38 AM

one of the most famous is Dracula's castle from Romania

  39. Sandra May 7, 2011 1:16 AM

The list is ridiculous without the alhambra, just unfair.

  40. listillo May 7, 2011 2:34 AM

Castle of Loarre, Huesca, Aragón, Spain.

  41. Jay May 7, 2011 3:04 AM

Wife and I drove the 'Castles Route' in Germany and saw many fantastic castles. We've always started in Frankfort with our travels except once to Munich. Heidelberg Castle has been a great place to visit for hundreds of years. Has the largest wine barrel in the world.
Italy also has many great castles!

  60. fati Oct 31, 2011 11:51 AM

    Albania , a castle for a city ...come visit .. ;)

where is the mexican castle chapultepec

  64. Richele Nov 3, 2011 7:28 AM

I really enjoyed these photos, but I have to agree that there are some I can't believe you didn't include. This isn't a very "international" selection, abut even if you were deliberately focusing on Europe... how on earth could you skip Versailles ?? ? Of course you can't list every castle, but that one truly deserves its fame, IMO.

  65. Steph Nov 8, 2011 2:47 PM

They were nice, but im surprised to see that there were no castles from Ireland on this list!! Some of the castles there are so ancient and beautiful!! Like Dunluce Castle, Ballynahinch Castle, Castlefreke, Duanguaire Castle, Glin Castle etc.

  66. Nan Nov 9, 2011 3:56 PM

These pictures are amazing. I have been to Burg Elz in Germany. It was really great. You had to hike to it and the area was gorgeous.

  67. Nan Nov 9, 2011 4:00 PM

I have also been to the Neuschwanstein Castle several times. That one is my favorite. The surroundings are beautiful. I would love to see the one in Romania. That one looks so cool!

  68. Harglemyer Nov 9, 2011 5:34 PM

Big shout out to Poland... I can't believe the author slept on their castles. Beautiful castles though...

  69. fran Nov 11, 2011 7:12 AM

Definitely recommend Alcazar Castle in Segovia, Spain. Have recently been there, it is absolutely stunning surrounded by beautiful landscape and nature! Miss it very much!

  70. justin Nov 12, 2011 1:09 PM

I went to Burg Eltz a few years back in my time in Germany. It is beautiful!

  71. dana Nov 20, 2011 11:38 AM

I have been to Nimrods Fortress in the Golan Heights many times and think this list needs some Middle Eastern Flavor!

  72. jess Dec 22, 2011 1:38 AM

the chinese construction are just remains because during one of the dynasties (forgot the name) they were completely taken down because they were Buddhist. the ones you see today when you go on tours as a tourist are just recreations. but if they were still around im sure they would dominate the list

  73. Barbahrooba Dec 30, 2011 12:53 AM

These are great photos! They make you just want to get out there and visit new countries and experience new cultures. If you can't get to all these places, visit a website like Travel Explosion to travel the world in minutes.

  75. thomas posauner Jan 6, 2012 11:33 AM

amazing, and I only have seen two of them...guess I gotta travel more. Good job with the picks

  76. www.viventura.com Jan 13, 2012 12:27 AM

Great list! I feel like my favorite one are the ones from Romania possibly because of the idea of Dracula living in one of them. Also I like a few that you can find in South america and most of them you will relate to pirates and great colonial times.

  77. mike Jan 13, 2012 8:21 AM

    Awsome!!

  78. jenna Jan 14, 2012 6:24 AM

I'm late to jumping on this, but i couldn't resist pointing out that the Mont St. Michel is in no way a castle at all. It's primarily a town, and at the top is a monastery. Not a castle.

  79. arun Feb 2, 2012 9:56 AM

surprisingly ... no 1 yet mentioned about indian castles / forts... such Neemrana Fort Palace, Nahargarh Fort, Amber Fort, Agra Fort and many more....

  80. sabrina Feb 4, 2012 5:19 PM

    Amazing job! I'm impressed

  81. istvan Feb 5, 2012 8:21 AM

    to FT
Mt Saint Michelle is beautiful, but not a castle. It is a town with a gotich church on the top.

  82. Val Feb 6, 2012 2:36 AM

Truly amazing... Would love to live in a castle one day...

  83. baxter Feb 6, 2012 12:43 PM

Great pics but very disappointed no Irish castles made, Blarney + Kilkenny castle and the rock of Cashel would definitly beat those japanese and the ruins of the english castle
    Sorry just my own opinion

  84. nameless Feb 7, 2012 1:34 AM

these castles just for fun i think not for defense or war

  85. meg Feb 9, 2012 5:28 AM

  86. BradP Feb 21, 2012 1:12 AM

How about the Chateau de Pierrefonds?

  87. Rudy Feb 26, 2012 11:44 PM

My wife and I really like to wander around Edinburgh Castle; a real castle...built for defense, full of history, and offering a wonderful view. Highly accessible to visitors.

  88. Mike Apr 19, 2012 4:47 PM

I have to comment on this because I can see Conwy Castle from my bedroom window!

There's utterly no chacne we can top your will i become smarter if i stop masturbating', as that is first class, but some of our more surreal ones over the last month have included, how to get rid of lots of spots on your tongue'; I was nude - under the jacket +doctor'; and how to make my boyfriend moan'.I'm quite proud, actually!NB. To make this person's boyfriend moan, I would recommend a swift kick to his nuts.

You haven't seen nothing before you 've seen the so called Kirchenburgen from Ardeal - Erdely - Siebenbürgen or easier TRANSILVANIA in Romania. Real ghotic, renaissance (sorry if wrong written!).
For those who claim above the 'too many german castles': there is in every particular domain of everything one who is first ranking, e.g. banks = Swiss, wine = France, Kung fu = China, etc. In this respect the germans have the most beutiful castles, yes because they can.
Please notice that evan the castles in Transilvania, such as Bran (Törzburg, 1377/ and all the Fortress churches have been built by the german population, the Siebenbürgen Sachsen living in that part of Romania since 1120).
    Me, I am 1/ 4 romanian, 1/ 4 bulgarian an 1/2 greec, living & lovin' Romania.
    All the best.

  100. Jila Jan 22, 2013 4:05 AM

What about Castle Stalker in Scotland?
It's more famously known as Castle Aaaaaarrrgh from the Monty Python and the Holy Grail movie.
