Faroe Islands OVERVIEW

What's 48 thousand Norwegian Viking ancestors multiplied by twice that many sheep and divided by a lilliputian 18-piece archipelago drifting northwest of Scotland and halfway between Iceland and Norway? The answer to this geo-mathematical puzzle is paradoxically simple- it can only be Faeroe Islands.

Here, in the outback of Europe, where shepherds and fishermen are major breadwinners, life unfolds tardily, veiled with misty hill fog and paced by the myriad sounds of nature. The sea's psychedelic murmur is occasionally broken by powerful splashes hitting the craggy cliffs. Seabirds of all sort pierce the silence of the empty moorland with hysteric screeching. The howling wind puts every single juicy grass blades in swishing motion, and the rhythmical whispers of crystal streams trickling down the rocks get drowned out with the heart-melting baaaah that floats above the deep green swath of cultivated pasture land.

Human presence doesn't make much difference to this spectacle. Micro towns and villages adorn the shores of glimmering fjords and their multicolored splendor brightens up the green-and-gray curtain of the layer-cake protrusions in the background. The capital, Tórshavn, is a masterpiece on the best quality canvas that no museum other than the Faroese outdoor gallery exhibits. Fell-walkers will be delighted, children entertained, artists inspired, and ornithologists dizzy from raising their heads up high. And you? Not curious what you are going to rake in for yourselves?
