Cheap Hotel Jakarta

Looking for a cheap hotel in Jakarta? That shouldn't be a problem at all as there are multiple choices from the vast selection of accommodations in the capital. Beside the group of renowned world-class service providers such as Intercontinental, JW Marriott, Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, Sheraton, and Shangri-la, budget hotels are the most built-up sector, with all sorts of locations and ratings to choose from.

However, there is something that may surprise you while you browse the lists of available options. Before you get down to a search, it would come in handy to familiarize yourself with special guidelines that the Indonesian government introduced to standardize hotel ratings. And thus, there are two broad categories that hotels may fall into: Star (one we are used to, with 1-5 rating) and Melati, which can be broken into 3 levels, with 3 being best quality.

When it comes to star ratings, they more or less correspond to the general idea of comfort we based on experience derived from different places in the world. The number of stars typically indicates the level of luxury and facilities we would get in any other hotel, though allowances should probably be made for local trends in décor. Generally speaking, the rule of thumb is that you get good value for money.

With Melati hotels, things may get complicated when we try to compare them with star-rated hotels. Given the principle that Melati 3 is best and Melati 1, it's easy to choose within this category, but it might be that you will find a Melati 3 hotel considerably better than a 4-star one. Frankly speaking, this will happen rarely, though. In the majority of cases Melati 1 will not be air-conditioned and have just a few facilities, if any, while Melati 3 will have AC, TV, a restaurant, and room service.

Additionally, there's the so-called 'losemen' category. Not really a hotel but a sort of homestay-type accommodation, it's usually family-run and quite cozy, with prices starting even at US$ 6, but be prepared to get what you pay for. A losemen will have a relatively low standard compared to even a really cheap hotel in Jakarta, be it downtown or the suburbs.
