The Montreal Planetarium is a facility that presents science and astronomy to the general public in a manner that is both fun and educational. It promises a great day for the whole family, from little kids to teens and even mums and dads.
First opened in 1966, the Planetarium puts on spectacular multimedia shows that tells you about astronomy and the world of space exploration. In 2007 the Planetarium was given a four million dollar facelift which improved its facilities and linked it to the Montreal Biodome which focuses on research into the ecosystem. The link between the two institutes allows them to share research and resources. It also allows visitors to see both facilities.
The highlight of the planetarium is the Star theatre where the astronomical shows are shown. You will get to see and learn how to identify the many different constellations, find out what a black hole is and even explore the far ends of the galaxy. The shows screen at fixed times throughout the day, alternating between English and French.
Younger kids in particular will love the morning screening of The Quest For Galactium. This show follows the adventures of Mia and Jeb as they set out to explore the universe and all its mysteries. These cartoon characters will teach the kids all the basics about astronomy. This special feature will run until the second week of May.
Children who are a little bit older and who have some background knowledge on astronomy will prefer the afternoon screening; Telescope: Passport To The Stars. This feature shows how you can make use of the telescope to explore and learn about the universe, definitely one for the little stargazers out there.
The teen audience will be fascinated by the latest offering that the Star theatre has; In Search Of Our Cosmic Origins. This show traces the development of the Atacama Large Millimetre which is being built in north China at an altitude of over 5000 feet. Upon completion it will be the world’s most powerful radio telescope and one that will allow more extensive and groundbreaking research. Each of the shows includes a guided tour of the night sky.
The Montreal Planetarium is one of the most cost effective attractions that you can visit. It cost just eight dollars for adults, four for youth and it is absolutely free for children under five. If you are planning on doing a lot of sightseeing, the best buy would be the Montreal Museums Pass which allows you to visit thirty-two museums and attraction all across the Canadian city. It even comes with a three day public transport pass all at the cost of just fifty bucks.
The Planetarium also hosts several special events and guest lectures, most of which are free and open to the public. It truly is a place where the whole family can enjoy itself and learn about astronomy and all that it entails. The Montreal Planetarium promises to be a great family day out and an educational one at that.
