What is the difference between stopover and layover ?

In flights sometimes its mentioned that there will be a layover, or a stopover . what is the difference between them ?

The difference between a stopover and a layover is the same than the difference between a drivers license and a driving licence ;-) .

I believe layover is overnight and stopover is an hour or more.
