What's the reason they chose Taiwan over Hainan?

they didnt choose anything. the kmt was booted out of hainan. they would have been booted out of taiwan too, but the korean war broke out, and that diverted all of the reds away from south east China.

As you say your from China you know that Hainan is much nearer the mainland than Taiwan.
If they retreated to Hainan it is much more easier to launch an assault on the island.

It is not the way you think. Both Hainan Is. and Taiwan were under KMT control.
When KMT lost the battles in Hainan, the remaining forces fell back to Taiwan.

Hainan isle is a popular traveler destination and Chiang Kai-shek's war would have been bad for business. The KMT couldn't afford the high lodging rates on Hainan Island, so they went to cheaper Taiwan instead.

Perhaps it was for the same reason that the CPC decided to attack the Chinese Nationalist Government instead of Japan. It was easier to do.
FYI: The Republic of China was STILL ON Hainan long after they moved forces to Taiwan. Hainan didn't fall to the PRC until 1950, which I take note was well-before Mao Zedong began starving 10+ million of his own supporters to death during the "Great Leap Forward".
Don't you ever read any history other than the propaganda issued by the CPC?

Hainan is much more difficult to defend than Taiwan.
