Bordeaux, the ‘Sleeping Beauty' of the Bordelais area as it is often called, is a graceful city at the banks of the Garonne River right in the heart of the world famed wine region. Undeniably, the city's beauty has been boosted by a skillful heritage preservation program implemented by the somewhat controversial ex-Prime Minister, Alain Juppé, whose initiative resulted in restoring the classical and neoclassical architecture, making the boulevards pedestrian-friendly and introducing high-tech transport system. And by no means is the Beauty a sleeping one. Filled with a lively cosmopolitan air and animated university population, Bordeaux hardly ever sleeps. To grasp the elegance have some leisurely strolls along the Quai de la Douane and top your visit off with touring the local wineries and October grape harvest.
